What is a dog wrist bone?

• Composed of seven major bony structures, the carpus is located in a dog's forelimb. The carpal bone is equivalent to the human wrist. Additionally, just like humans, dogs can hyperextend their wrist bones, leading to a potential collapse of the wrist joint. Wrist injury occurs when excessive force is applied to the wrist bone.
• Most dogs diagnosed with a wrist or carpal bone injury have suffered a traumatic event, such as falling from a great height, being hit by a car, or playing a wrong sport. Pain from a wrist injury can cause your dog to limp, have swollen ankles, and have weakness in the front legs. Basically, a wrist bone injury can hurt your puppy.

Causes of Canine Wrist/Carpal Injuries

• While trauma is likely the cause of a canine wrist injury, there are other things to consider. These include:
• Falls and Work/Sports Related Injuries - Torn ligaments in the wrist are usually caused by severe external force and can cause severe collapse of the joint.
• Inflammatory polyarthropathy - or an inflammatory response of the immune system that causes swelling, pain, and laxity in the wrist joints.
• Degenerative disease - common in working breeds, this may result in bilateral wrist hyperextension.

• Abnormal, hyperextended stance gait

• Joint swelling or redness
• Forelimb swelling
• Swollen paw
• Do not want to stand up from a sitting position
• Prefer one leg over the other
• Joint instability

Treatment of Canine Wrist Injuries

• Anti-inflammatory drugs:Anti-inflammatory medications help reduce inflammation, which can reduce pain in injured joints. This approach can be used alone or in combination with other treatments and can help your dog find some relief.
• Use of dog wrist brace:Stabilization is usually the best course of action. A wrist brace (or splint) helps support your dog's weight while it heals,like when you sprain your ankle. A wrist brace is also used postoperatively if the sprain is severe and requires clinical intervention.
