The most common traits of German Shepherds are loyalty, self-assurance, and an eagerness to learn, which make them the ideal working dog. However, the long, sloping backs of German Shepherds put them at risk for a wide range of spinal issues. The most common spinal conditions in German Shepherds are degenerative myelopathy and intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).
IVDD is the degeneration and eventual protrusion of the intervertebral disc which causes pinching on the spinal cord.
In middle-aged to older dogs with long backs and high levels of activity, such as working dogs, IVDD is most frequently observed.Your dog will experience pain from this spinal squeezing, which also results in nerve problems that may appear as a bent back, trouble walking, and in severe cases, paralysis and incontinence.
Another spinal disease that German Shepherds are unfortunately prone to is Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). DM is the chronic and progressive degeneration of the spinal cord. This disease is genetic and therefore is not caused by activity or spinal structure.
If your German Shepherd has IVDD or DM, you can use back brace to support the spin.
IVDD dog brace is designed to support your dog's spine both from above and below while allowing your dog to move around comfortably.
